Positive Behaviour Support

What PBS actually is

Positive Behaviour Support is an evidence-based approach to understanding why behaviours of concern happen, and changing the circumstances around a person, rather than trying to change the person themselves.

Every behaviour serves a purpose. It might be communicating overwhelm, escaping a situation that feels unbearable, seeking connection, or meeting a sensory need. When someone doesn’t have another way to meet that need or the environment keeps ignoring the message, the behaviour grows louder. PBS starts from the belief that the person is never the problem. The mismatch between the person and their environment is.

Done well, PBS improves quality of life first, and reduces behaviours of concern as a result.

How We Work

No mystery, no jargon. Here’s exactly what happens when you work with us, because families deserve to know what they’re saying yes to.

Before we even knock on your door

Our work starts before the first visit. Your practitioner reviews everything you’ve shared with us and completes a careful risk and safety check, so the first meeting is planned well, safe, comfortable and right for your family.

We also map out your funding from the very start. Using your NDIS plan, we plan how your behaviour support budget will be used across our work together, assessment, plan writing, training, travel, all of it, so you can see where every hour goes. No surprises, no funding running out without warning.

The first meeting

The first visit is about getting to know each other. We’ll talk, listen and start understanding your family’s story, unhurried, and without judgement. You’ll also receive a few things from us on day one: a feedback form (because we want to hear how we’re doing from the very start) and information about your advocacy options and rights.

Getting to know the behaviour – properly

This is the part too many providers rush, and the part we never will. Behaviour is communication and understanding what it’s saying takes real time: observation, conversations with the people who know the person best, and validated, evidence-based assessment tools, not guesswork.

For every client, we complete a thorough behavioural risk assessment with a clear action plan. You don’t wait months for safety. We give that plan to you, your family and carers and wider team within a month as an interim measure, train your support team on it, and provide easy-read versions everyone can actually use, so everyone is safe and on the same page while the comprehensive work continues.

If any restrictive practices are in place, sometimes they’ve been there so long nobody remembers why, we identify them carefully, assess if they are needed, explain them clearly, and start planning how to reduce and eliminate them.

Writing the plan

We write plans that people can use, in plain English, built around the person’s strengths. And we’re upfront about timing:

• Where a restrictive practice is involved, you’ll have an interim behaviour support plan within one month, and a comprehensive plan within six months, these are NDIS requirements, and we meet them.

• Where there’s no restrictive practice, you’ll have a comprehensive plan within six months, or sooner, if you or your support team need it.

Here’s the honest bit: a good plan can’t be rushed. It needs enough sessions, enough observation and enough understanding behind it. We’d rather take the time to get it right than hand you a fast document that changes nothing, and we’ll keep you safe and supported the whole way there.

Training your team

We never hand over a plan and disappear, a plan only changes a life when the people around the person know how to follow it. For every plan we write, we train your support workers, providers and family on how to put it into practice, and we provide easy-read resources for everyday use. This isn’t an optional extra; it’s part of the work.

Staying with you

We track progress, adjust strategies as the person grows, and write progress reports in the lead-up to your NDIS plan review — so the evidence is there to secure the right supports for the next plan period.

Our Rates & Travel

We charge in line with the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits — never above them. Current rates for specialist behaviour support (effective 1 July 2026):

These are the NDIS price caps for 2026–27 and apply to all our behaviour support work — assessment, plan development, training and reporting. Your Implementation Plan maps exactly how your funded hours will be used across our work together, so you’ll always know where your funding stands. Private client fees are discussed upfront, before any commitment.

Travel

We come to where life happens — home, school, the community — so travel is part of how we work, and we keep it fair and transparent:

  • Travel time is billed at 50% of our hourly rate, in line with NDIS rules — never the full rate
  • We only charge for travel time actually spent, up to the NDIS limits (30 minutes each way in metro areas)
  • Where we see more than one client in the same area on the same day, travel time is split between them — nobody pays for the whole trip
  • Any travel costs are mapped into your Implementation Plan from day one, so there are no surprise line items on an invoice.

Rates are set by the NDIA and updated each July. Questions about how far your funding will stretch? Ask us — we’ll walk you through it in plain English.

Psychology Services – Coming Soon

We’re growing carefully, and psychology is next. Soon, Care Garden Therapy will offer psychology services alongside behaviour support,  assessment and therapeutic support delivered with the same neuroaffirming approach, by people who understand neurodivergence from the inside.
For the families we work with, that means fewer referrals to chase, fewer waiting rooms, and one team that already knows your story.

We’ll share more soon. If you’d like to be first to hear when psychology services open, or want to talk about whether they might suit your family, get in touch and we’ll keep you posted.

The right support can change everything

We’re here to walk alongside you.
